AYSO Six Philosophies: Balanced Teams

Ahhh...I can start to sense it. Spring is around the corner. That means it's time to focus on another AYSO core philosophy. So far I've discussed "Open Registration" and "Everyone Plays". Today is "Balanced Teams". Why does that matter? It all goes back to player development. The last two summers I coached baseball in my spare time. My teams won one game in about 16 tries (and that was a forfeit...still celebrated though). Both of my teams had very little experience on the pitching mound compared to other teams in the league. Still, I was incredibly proud of all the boys for the heart and effort they gave to learn positions that could help our team. They did develop and improve throughout the season, but did the league as whole benefit? Probably not. Many youth teams spend a fair amount of their time traveling to play the "best competition" so they can improve. We're trying to do that in our own backyard. Believe me, I've seen plenty of talent on our fields. Balancing that talent to benefit the development of ALL players is another philosophy I can believe in. Next up..."Good Sportsmanship."
